Second Principle — Their Excuse: 'We only seek nearness through them'

The mushrikūn say: 'We did not call upon them or turn to them except to seek nearness and intercession.' The proof is His saying: 'And those who take protectors besides Him say: We only worship them so that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position.' (az-Zumar 39:3).

شرح علمي

This is the very same excuse used today by those who call upon saints, the dead in graves, or 'awliyā' for help. The Qur'an refutes the excuse itself.
