Belief in the Last Day (Al-Yawm al-Akhir) is the fifth pillar of Islamic faith (iman) and a foundational concept in the creed (aqeedah) of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah. Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen explained in his Sharh al-'Aqeedah al-Wasitiyyah that this belief is not merely about a single day, but a comprehensive acceptance of all that Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) have informed us will occur after death.

This belief encompasses several key stages:

1.  The Trial of the Grave (Fitnat al-Qabr): After burial, every person will be questioned by two angels, Munkar and Nakir, about their Lord, their religion, and their Prophet. The believer will be kept firm by Allah, while the disbeliever and hypocrite will falter.
2.  The Punishment and Bliss of the Grave ('Adhab al-Qabr wa Na'imuhu): Based on one's answers and deeds, the grave will either be a garden from the gardens of Paradise or a pit from the pits of Hellfire, with its torment or bliss continuing until the Resurrection.
3.  The Resurrection (Al-Ba'th): On the Last Day, the angel Israfil will blow the Trumpet, and all of creation will be resurrected from their graves, naked, barefoot, and uncircumcised.
4.  The Gathering and Judgment (Al-Hashr wa'l-Hisab): All of humanity will be gathered before Allah for judgment. The books of deeds will be distributed, and deeds will be weighed on the Scales (al-Mizan). Nothing will be hidden from Allah.
5.  The Bridge (As-Sirat): A bridge will be laid over the Hellfire, which everyone must cross. The believers will pass over it according to the strength of their deeds—some like lightning, others like the wind, and some crawling—while the disbelievers will fall into the Fire.
6.  The Final Abode: The ultimate destinations are Paradise (Jannah) and Hellfire (Nar), both of which are eternal. Paradise is the abode of unimaginable bliss prepared for the righteous, and Hell is the abode of severe punishment for the disbelievers.

Belief in the Hereafter is essential for a Muslim's piety. It reminds one that this worldly life is a temporary test, instilling a sense of accountability, encouraging good deeds, and fostering both hope in Allah's mercy and fear of His justice.

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen explains in his commentary on al-Aqeedah al-Wasitiyyah that belief in the Last Day (al-Yawm al-Akhir) is one of the six pillars of Iman (faith). This belief is not limited to a single day but covers everything that Allah and His Messenger have informed us will occur after death.

The Hereafter begins with the trial of the grave (Fitnat al-Qabr), where every person will be questioned by two angels, Munkar and Nakir, about their Lord, their religion, and their Prophet. Based on their answers, their grave will be a garden from Paradise or a pit from Hellfire.

It includes belief in the major and minor signs that precede the Hour, followed by the blowing of the Trumpet, the resurrection of all of mankind from their graves (al-Ba'th), and their gathering (al-Hashr) on the Day of Resurrection. On this day, people will be brought to account for their deeds (al-Hisab). Books of deeds will be distributed, and actions will be weighed on the Scale (al-Mizan), as Allah says, 'And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all.'

Following the accounting, people must pass over the Bridge (al-Sirat), which is set over Hellfire. The believers will pass over it at speeds corresponding to their deeds, while the disbelievers will fall into the Fire. The final destinations are Jannah (Paradise), a place of eternal bliss for the righteous believers, and an-Nar (Hellfire), a place of eternal punishment for the disbelievers. Muslim sinners may be punished in the Fire for a period before being admitted to Paradise through the mercy of Allah and the intercession of the righteous.
