Imam Malik held that the traveller may combine Dhuhr and ʿAsr, and Maghrib and ʿIshā', when he is actually moving on his journey — combining them either at the time of the first or the second. He preferred that if one stops in a place to rest, he should pray each in its own time, and only combine while in motion or when there is need (rain, fear, a clear hardship). The basis is the Prophet's (ﷺ) combining at Tabūk and on the journey to Hajj al-Wadāʿ.

Key Takeaway

Combining is permitted for the traveller, especially while in motion or in need; Mālik preferred praying each in its time when stopped.
