Kitāb aṣ-Ṣalāh wa Ḥukm Tārikihā
Kitāb aṣ-Ṣalāh wa Ḥukm Tārikihā, opening section
Salah is the pillar of the religion: whoever establishes it has established the religion, and whoever destroys it has destroyed the religion. It is the second of the five pillars after the shahadatayn, and it is the only act of worship which Allah obligated upon His Messenger (ﷺ) directly above the seven heavens on the night of al-Isra'' wal-Mi''raj — without intermediary — indicating its supreme rank. It is the first thing about which the servant will be questioned on the Day of Judgement: if it is sound, the rest of his deeds will be sound; if it is corrupt, the rest will be corrupt. ([at-Tirmidhi 413](/hadith/tirmidhi/413), sahih). Salah connects the heart of the servant to his Lord five times a day, washes away minor sins as flowing water washes filth ([al-Bukhari 528](/hadith/bukhari/528), Muslim 667), and is the comfort of the eyes of the believer — for the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "And the comfort of my eyes was placed in salah." (an-Nasa''i 3940, sahih).
Evidence
Qur'an
"Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater." (al-''Ankabut 29:45)
Key Takeaway
Salah is the pillar of the religion, the first matter of judgement, and the connection of the believer to his Lord five times a day.
