Arabic Text
English Translation
— Ibn ‘Umar (RA) (Bukhari & Muslim)
Commentary
Read by the Salaf to refute those who think faith is only inward. Outward acts (shahādah, ṣalāh, zakāh) are required for the worldly judgement that someone is Muslim.
Extended Explanation
This hadith is frequently misquoted in isolation. Read in context with the Qur'ān and the rest of the Sunnah, the ‘people’ refers specifically to the mushrikīn of Arabia — those who had no covenant with the Muslims and who were given the option of Islam, the sword, or the covenant.
The key fiqh point is what the Salaf derived: outward acts establish someone as a Muslim in this world. Whoever pronounces the shahādah, prays, and gives zakāh is treated as a Muslim — their blood and wealth are protected. Their inward state is between them and Allah.
Ibn Rajab notes: this hadith was the basis for Abū Bakr's (RA) war against those who refused to pay zakāh after the Prophet's ﷺ death — even though they prayed and pronounced the shahādah. The pillars are inseparable.
From the Scholars
"‘People’ here is restricted by other texts to the polytheists who had no covenant. The People of the Book pay jizyah and are not fought as long as they uphold the covenant."
"The hadith does not authorise individuals to fight — it addresses the Prophet ﷺ as the ruler. Today, jihad of this kind is the prerogative of the legitimate authority, not vigilantes."
Fiqh & Rulings
- •We judge by the apparent (al-ẓāhir); Allah judges what is hidden (al-bāṭin).
- •Pronouncing the shahādah grants worldly protection of life and wealth.
- •Refusing zakāh while pronouncing the shahādah was treated by Abū Bakr (RA) as warranting war — the pillars cannot be separated.
- •Fighting is the prerogative of the legitimate Muslim ruler, not individuals or groups acting on their own.
