Madarij as-Salikin

Madarij as-Salikin 1/302–305

Allah's mercy precedes His wrath. Every sin other than shirk is under His will to forgive — He may forgive it for whom He wills. As for shirk, dying upon it without repentance is the only sin Allah has decreed He will not forgive: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills." Yet even shirk is forgiven if a person repents from it before death; the door of tawbah is open until the soul reaches the throat or the sun rises from the west.

Key Takeaway

Allah forgives every sin — including shirk — for the one who sincerely repents before death; only unrepented shirk is excluded.
