Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Karim

Tafsir of Surah al-'Ankabut, verse 46

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen, in his commentary on the Qur'an, explains that the God worshipped in Islam is indeed the same God who sent the previous prophets, including Moses ('Isa) and Jesus (Musa), upon whom be peace. The basis for this is the clear statement in the Qur'an.

Allah instructs the believers to say to the People of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): "We have believed in that which was revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him" (Al-'Ankabut 29:46). This verse explicitly affirms that the object of worship is one and the same.

However, the Shaykh and other scholars like him clarify that while the God is the same, the conception of God held by Christians and Jews has been corrupted. The Christians deviated by adopting the doctrine of the Trinity and claiming that Jesus is the son of God or God Himself, which is a form of shirk (polytheism). The Jews, while being monotheists, rejected the prophethood of Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them) and have attributed unworthy characteristics to Allah in their scriptures.

Therefore, from an Islamic perspective, although the People of the Book originally received guidance to worship the One True God, their current beliefs and practices do not represent the pure monotheism (Tawhid) that Allah has commanded. Their worship is not accepted by Allah because it is mixed with disbelief and deviation. Islam came as the final, complete, and uncorrupted revelation, rectifying these errors and guiding humanity back to the correct worship of the one and only God, Allah, Who has no son, partner, or equal.

Evidence

Qur'an

Say, "We have believed in that which was revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him." ([Qur'an 29:46](/quran/29/46))

Key Takeaway

Muslims, Christians, and Jews all direct their worship to the same Creator, but only the Islamic conception and worship of this One God is correct and free from distortion.
