Majmu' Fatawa wa Rasa'il al-Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen

Vol. 4, Kitab al-Aqeedah, Bab fi Asma'illah Ta'ala

The name 'Allah' is the proper name for the Lord of the Worlds, and no one else is named by it. It is the primary name of God, and all other divine names are considered attributes of Allah.

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen explains that the origin of the word 'Allah' is 'al-Ilah' (الإله), which means 'The One who is worshipped'. The hamzah was removed for ease of pronunciation, becoming 'Allah'. Therefore, the meaning of the name revolves around the concept of divinity and worship.

'Al-Ilah' is in the meaning of 'al-Ma'luh' (المألوه), which means 'the one who is worshipped out of love and veneration'. This is the essence of its meaning. Allah is the one whom hearts deify. They love Him and glorify Him, they fear Him and have hope in Him, they turn to Him in their times of need and for their requests, because He alone is the true God who deserves all forms of worship.

Thus, the name 'Allah' signifies the One and Only Being who is deserving of all worship, to the exclusion of all other beings. It is a comprehensive name that implies all of His other beautiful names and lofty attributes. When one mentions 'Allah', one refers to the Creator, the Sustainer, the Provider, the All-Knowing, the All-Merciful, the King, the Holy One—the Lord who possesses all attributes of perfection and is free from all deficiencies.

Key Takeaway

The name 'Allah' is God's primary proper name, meaning 'The One who is worshipped and deified' out of love, reverence, and awe.
