Majmu' al-Fatawa

Majmu' al-Fatawa 4/271, 18/307

The Fire is a real, present abode created by Allah as a recompense for the disbelievers, the hypocrites, and the rebellious from among the sinners. It has seven gates, each gate for a portion of them. The disbelievers will dwell in it forever; the sinners from the people of tawhīd, if they enter it, will not remain forever — they will be removed from it by the intercession of the Prophet (ﷺ), the angels, the believers, and finally by the mercy of the Most Merciful, until none remains in it from the people of "lā ilāha illa Allāh".

Key Takeaway

The Fire is eternal for disbelievers; sinning monotheists who enter it will eventually be brought out by intercession and Allah's mercy.
