Volume 12, Risalah al-Hijab

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-'Uthaymeen explained that the Hijab is a religious obligation (wajib) for every believing woman. The purpose of this divine injunction is to preserve the modesty, dignity, and honor of women, and to protect society from the sources of temptation (fitnah).

The correct and obligatory Hijab, according to the Shaykh, is that which covers a woman's entire body, including her face and hands, in the presence of non-mahram men (men she can legally marry). This position is based on a comprehensive analysis of the scriptural evidences and is considered the most cautious and sound view, although some scholars have permitted the uncovering of the face and hands.

The Shaykh emphasizes that the Hijab is not merely a cultural tradition but a clear act of worship and obedience to Allah. The conditions for a proper Hijab, derived from the Qur'an and Sunnah, are that it must be thick and opaque (not see-through), loose-fitting (not revealing the shape of the body), and should not be an adornment in itself, nor should it resemble the clothing of men or disbelievers.

Failing to observe the Hijab as prescribed is considered a sin for which a woman is accountable to Allah. It is a form of displaying one's adornments, which is prohibited.

Evidence

Qur'an

"O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful." ([Surah Al-Ahzab 33:59](/quran/33/59))

"And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests..." ([Surah An-Nur 24:31](/quran/24/31))

Hadith

A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that Asma', the daughter of Abu Bakr, entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wearing a thin garment. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away from her and said: 'O Asma', when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it is not proper that anything should be seen of her except for this and this,' and he pointed to his face and hands. (Narrated by Abu Dawud; classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albani, though with some scholarly debate on its chain, the meaning is supported by other evidence).

Key Takeaway

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen affirmed that it is obligatory (wajib) for a woman to cover her entire body, including her face and hands, from non-mahram men, as this is a command from Allah to preserve modesty and prevent fitnah (temptation).
