الأمر بالمعروف

Reported by al-Khallal in al-Amr bi al-Maʿruf & Ibn Abi Shaybah

Imam Malik was asked about singing and musical instruments and replied: "Only the corrupt among us do that" (Ibn Abi Shaybah, al-Mussanaf). His madhhab as recorded by his students considered ghina with instruments to be forbidden, in line with the explicit hadith: "There will be people from my Ummah who will make lawful fornication, silk, alcohol, and musical instruments" (Bukhari, taʿliq sahih).

Key Takeaway

The Imam of Madinah ruled music with instruments to be the practice of the corrupt.
