Volume 12, Book of Salah, Section on the Ruling and Virtue of Jumu'ah Prayer

Shaykh Ibn Baz explained that the Friday (Jumu'ah) prayer holds immense significance in Islam and is one of its most important symbols. It is an individual obligation (fard 'ayn) upon every free, sane, adult, resident Muslim male who has no valid excuse to miss it. The obligation is established directly in the Qur'an, where Allah commands the believers: 'O you who have believed, when the adhan is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah (Friday), then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.' [[Surah Al-Jumu'ah 62:9](/quran/62/9)]. This verse unequivocally establishes the mandate to cease worldly activities and hasten to the prayer.

The virtues of the day of Jumu'ah and its prayer are numerous, as highlighted in the authentic Sunnah. The Prophet (ﷺ) designated it as the best day of the week, saying, 'The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it. And the Hour will not be established except on Friday.' (Sahih Muslim).

Furthermore, attendance at the Jumu'ah prayer is a means of major spiritual purification. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Whoever performs Ghusl on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, uses his hair oil or perfumes himself, then proceeds to the mosque and does not separate two people, then prays what is decreed for him, and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday will be forgiven.' (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Conversely, Shaykh Ibn Baz would emphasize the severe sin of abandoning the Friday prayer. The Prophet (ﷺ) issued a stern warning: 'Let people cease from neglecting Jumu’ah, or Allah will seal their hearts and then they will be among the heedless (al-ghafileen).' (Sahih Muslim). This hadith shows that intentionally missing it is a grave matter that leads to the hardening of the heart and spiritual deviation. Thus, the Jumu'ah prayer is a cornerstone of a Muslim's weekly worship.

Friday prayer is an individual obligation (fard 'ayn) for men and one of the greatest rituals of Islam, serving as a weekly gathering for remembrance and forgiveness of sins.
