The direction of prayer (Qibla) is toward the Kaaba in Mecca as a direct commandment from Allah, serving as a sign of a Muslim's servitude and obedience. Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen explained that this was not always the case. Initially, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and the early Muslims faced Bayt al-Maqdis (the Sacred House in Jerusalem).

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a longing in his heart to face the Kaaba, the House built by his forefather Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Allah answered his desire and revealed the command to change the Qibla. This historical event is mentioned in the Qur'an:

"We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]." (Surah al-Baqarah, 2:144)

The wisdom behind this change was multifaceted. It served as a test for the believers, to distinguish those who would follow the Prophet without hesitation from those who were attached to the previous Qibla of the People of the Book. When the command was revealed, the companions who were in the middle of prayer immediately turned towards the new Qibla upon hearing the news. This demonstrates their complete submission to Allah's will.

Furthermore, establishing the Kaaba as the Qibla gave the Muslim Ummah a distinct identity and unified them in their worship, with all believers across the globe turning their faces towards the same sacred point. Ultimately, the reason is one of submission; we face the Kaaba simply because Allah commanded it.

Qur'an

قد نرى تقلب وجهك في السماء فلنولينك قبلة ترضاها فول وجهك شطر المسجد الحرام وحيث ما كنتم فولوا وجوهكم شطره - Surah al-Baqarah, 2:144

Hadith

The companions were praying Zuhr at the Quba Mosque when a man came and said, "A Qur'anic revelation has been revealed to the Messenger of Allah tonight and he has been ordered to face the Ka'bah, so face it." Their faces were towards Sham (Syria, i.e., Jerusalem), so they turned around towards the Ka'bah. (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 403; Muslim, 526)

Key Takeaway

Muslims face the Kaaba because Allah commanded them to, changing the direction from Jerusalem to Mecca as a test of faith and to give the Muslim Ummah a distinct Qibla.
